Situated in Melbourne’s west, Westkon Precast is a large, busy and high quality precast operation spread across two sites in Melton and Sunshine. The Melton plant is predominately involved with the manufacture of concrete elements for infrastructure projects, including bridge beams and road barriers. Commercial and residential projects are serviced out of their precast yard in Sunshine where precast panels and related concrete products are produced.
It is from out of the Sunshine yard that Westkon Precast supplied quality precast panels to a luxury apartment development in the affluent suburb of South Yarra. “The Apartments”, as the $250 million project was known, is located at 1 Clara Street in South Yarra, and is close to the well known Toorak Road and Chapel Street precincts. |

To provide continuity of reinforcement throughout the structure, and particularly between the “in situ” cast and precast concrete elements, was the challenge that was met through the use of Reidbar connection systems. Reidbar Grouters were subsequently specified for use in the precast panels. The Reidbar Grouters enabled fast and secure on-site fixing of 25mm and 32mm Reidbar reinforcing bar in precast panels to Reidbar in “in situ” poured concrete. Panels were lowered onto protruding Reidbar Starter bars, with each entering a Reidbar Grouter sleeve. While the panel was braced securely in place, 65MPa cementitious grout was pumped in to fill the gap between the Reidbar and the Grouter, providing a full “bar break” connection capable of yielding the 500MPa Reidbar. |

Working closely with Westkon Precast’s different departments, including design engineering, manufacturing and procurement, Reid was able to provide lifting designs, concrete lifting anchor systems and consumables throughout the project promptly and efficiently, meeting manufacturing requirements without over-engineering. Another successful project completed by Westkon to add to their growing resume of residential, commercial and infrastructure constructions. |
