Strip

Whilst the shape the final concrete structure takes is virtually limited only by the architect’s imagination, the final appearance is determined by a number of factors, including:

  • Concrete quality control
  • Continuity of concrete pour
  • Age and quality of formwork components
  • Type and application of release agents

The ability to successfully strip the hardened concrete element from its formwork is a critical part of the quality assurance process.

Until recently formwork release was achieved by coating the formwork with a film of a petroleum based product, usually diesel oil, prior to concrete placement. This approach has fallen out of favour due to the unpredictable results it can give, and the environmental and health ramifications associated with the use of high volatile organic compounds (VOC) on site, and in precast yards.
